About the Oceanwatch Neighborhood
Adjacent to Oceanwatch is Fort Sewall, built in 1742. It is perhaps best known for giving shelter beneath its guns to the Constitution during the War of 1812; that visit was re-enacted in 1997 when Old Ironsides sailed for the first time in over 100 years, from Boston to Marblehead.
Immediately below Oceanwatch is Fort Beach, in a beautiful and sheltered small cove that is perfect for children to swim, play in the sand or explore the rocks. Many local lobstermen and boaters keep dinghys here, using tow lines to bring them in for boarding.
Opposite Fort Beach, on the Little Harbor side of the causeway leading to Oceanwatch, is a small beach that can be reached without coping with stairs or seawall. It is ideal for launching dinghys, kayaks, or other small craft.
